Hrm. I just got a message purporting to tell me that an email I sent was undeliverable. I sent no such email.

This some new kind of spammy bullshit?

when that happens to me, it's usually a spammer is using an open relay somewhere on the 'net and spoofing my addy to send junk. Fortunately, open relays usually get caught and shut down pretty fast, particularly if you're using yahoo mail/hotmail/etc.

What she said. I get them all the time being returned undeliverable to the same person each time. Weird, but they go right in the trash.

Also -- someone's machine (not necessarily an un-locked mailserver) may have been virused, taken over, and is now being used to send spam & viruses out to any address the virus could find in the infected inbox -- with a FROM address faked to some randomly-selected email in the inbox.

*THEN* there's the ones that come into my company mailbox that look like a bounced mail from my machine, but with a line in the text similar to "Bullshit Inc. Antivirus trapped a virus'ed email that came out of your machine ... activate the attached EXE file to sweep your machine and clear it out."

Of course the virus sweeper on my machine had already blitzed the attachment.

Dude, where have you been? I've been assuring customers that this does not mean they have a virus for months now, maybe years.

No, but that's what customers say when they call :)

Yeah, but some computer neo-twits scream about viruses when the power chord comes out of the back of their CPU.
