there's really no reason for them to not have an account, since you could just give them an invite code and they could keep the account simply for reading your journal and commenting. I know some people do that.

One possible reason: They just don't want to.

well, yeah, I realise that.. I just don't see the point of it. But I agree that it is their right to not-want whatever they choose.
