Reverence? Ha! Not here, folks.
Last night I was telling my wife about how I'm patterning the events in the War for Earth series after the Irish struggle for Independence, taking inspiration from their story. I also mentioned that the Honor Harrington books by David Weber are inspired by the Horatio Hornblower novels and the period in which they occur: The Napoleonic Wars. She challenged me to write a science fiction book inspired by Moby Dick.
Now, this makes sense, because 1) I've actually read the entire Moby Dick (unlike most English Lit types), I know the book well, and I'm taking a grad school course in Melville and Hawthorne this semester that will have me re-reading Moby Dick anyway.
No sooner had she issued the challenge than ideas began floating in my head for how to translate the book's ideas and deeper themes to a science fiction context, and they've now been written down. I'm sure it will have some kind of neat, space opera title, like "Seeker in the Deep," or something, but for now, we're calling it....
Wait for it....
"Space Dick."
Yeah. We're sick, sick people over here.
