Olympics and Violence
Frank Herbert said:
I wish the morons protesting the Olympic Torch understood this. Hell, I wish most protesters understood this.
I could say all kinds of things about the China/Tibet situation, but frankly most of my readers already have a good grasp of what's going on there, and those that don't are quite capable of getting the information.
So instead I'll remind the world that the Olympics should be outside politics. The Olympics are about coming together peacefully to promote understanding and the growth of humanity. These protesters are shitting on that. And where were they last month, anyway? Ten to one they were on some other cause-of-the-moment.
And I'll give you this:
( San Francisco Chinese Lesbian Helen Zia explains why she'll be carrying the torch. )
The convoluted wording of legalisms grew up around the necessity to hide from ourselves the violence we intend toward each other. Between depriving a man of one hour from his life and depriving him of his life there exists only a difference of degree. You have done violence to him, consumed his energy. Elaborate euphemisms may conceal your intent to kill, but behind any use of power over another the ultimate assumption remains: "I feed on your energy."
