Oh dear, it's happened ...
I'm happily writing a paper on Linda Hogan's Solar Storms that not only discusses the book, but brings in the work on Liminal Theory of Arnold Van Gennep and Victor Turner, as well as the writings of Paula Gunn-Allen.
Dear gods in heaven, it's finally happened: I've become an academic. It's proved to me, this paper, that this is what I'm good at. I finally believe that I'm smart enough and learned enough to teach this stuff. Of course, Impostor Syndrome will rear its ugly head again, but then I'll beat it back down.
Last night I was talking to my aunt about school, and I mentioned that because I'm a "graduating senior," I get priority registration for next semester.
"Oh, god. Say that again," she said.
"What?"
"'Graduating senior.'"
"Oh, that. Yeah, I thought that would make you happy."
"I'm just glad it's happening. I always hoped you'd go back and finish it; you're meant to be a teacher. Are you sorry you wasted all that time?"
"Not really. Sometimes it bothers me, but I honestly think I needed to go through all that and grow up, first."
"Yeah, I can see that."
Snerk. I'm glad it makes her happy. She's also happy that I'm happily married, and waiting--but not too eagerly--for grandchildren.
