I'm a bit ... bothered ... with a few things.
Item 1:
DELETED - Faulty Assumptions based on insufficient evidence.
Item 2:
My friends mostly agree that renting a houseboat on Shasta next year (or the year after, even) would be fun and we should do it. But almost no one will actually commit, and usually the reasons given are "it's too expensive" and "I don't know if I can take the time."
Ok, the expense isn't tiny, but frankly we ALL spend at least that much every year on movies, eating out, and other nonsense. $10 to $20 out of each paycheck given to a responsible person to keep for the trip doesn't seem too much to me, and I make less than all the other employed people in my close circle. (And don't even think of bringing up my aborted Worldcon -- that's different. I had horrible bills to pay and no income half the year, wiping out what I'd saved up for it. And saving $1000 again in three months is impossible.)
As to the concept of time... folks, the idea is you plan ahead. No one who isn't idle rich just goes off on something like this on the spur-of-the-moment. The idea is to plan the time we want to do it, schedule it, reserve the boat, and have something cool to look forward to.
Ah well. It likely won't happen until after I've begun teaching, and then it will be because I paid for it all and I'll just invite the few I feel like at the time.
Item 3
One of my oldest and closest friends is getting excessively pissy with me lately. I'm not sure what's up with that. I don't know that I did anything wrong, but it seems as if I did. Wish I knew what it was.
