Here's why it sounds like a bad 80's ballad.

It practically IS. It was written in the 70s.

...oh yeah ... if it was, it would be announced in the credits. Heavily.

(JMS still did his first attempt at songwriting better. And had a better singer to present it.)

It had nothing to do with Roddenberry, it was Diane something... the thing was a wellknown song at one time, supposedly.

Diane Warren, aparently reasonably well known for turning out some impressively mediocre to lousy butt rock. If they wanted a weird 80's song they should havev used Major Tom coming home, heh.
