I know a guy online who is constantly crowing about getting his book published, and how it's now in development as a PC game.
Just one problem... He's self-publishing and writing the damned game himself!
Vanity press does not a good author make. Go no further than the infamous Mendocino Medicine Man for proof of that. Gods, I wish I'd bought a copy of that. It'd be a great firestarter.

he's in for a good time. you get to do all your own promotional stuff, all your own distribution, recoup all your own costs...mwah haha! good luck, buddy.

Frankly, if my stuff isn't good enough to be published by the big boys of SF (or even smaller legit presses), I'm ok with that. I'm not forking my OWN dollars to get published.
