My Principal asked to speak to me this morning before school. I was a little nervous, as layoffs are coming, but it was a good discussion. Basically, she told me that today she's having some "uncomfortable discussions" with several teachers, and that the staff may be a little depressing and pissy the rest of the week, but that I should not worry, as she intends to fight to keep me next year. "I enjoy working with you and consider you a great asset to this school" were some of the words used, along with "If I have to twist your arm and shove you up against the wall to
keep you here next year, I will." The implication being, of course, that some teachers are being told today that their services will not be required next year. That's different from normal layoffs in that the decision has already been made to get rid of them. We're probably ALL getting pink slips, but some of us will be hired back next year and some won't.

Good to know, even if I decide to move on. However, with the current situation, and the fact that technically I'm not a Permanent teacher until AFTER my first day next year, it's very probable I'll be here at least one more year. Because until I have Permanent status, I'm considered a Probation 2, even though this is my third year of teaching (2 Intern years
are counted as 1 year), and Probes can't transfer to other schools by contract.

Besides, there are good things about teaching here. And after all the effort I've put into this advanced class for next year, and finally gotten the books I want to use, leaving seems kind of pointless. And I know some of the teachers who will be having those "uncomfortable discussions," and this place will be a better place to work without those folks.
