The Second Day

I'm so tired. I got up at 6am, went to school by 7:15, got my lesson plan set up for my first class. I went to the District HQ to fill out paperwork, only to be hit my a series of SNAFUs that made my blood boil. I got back to school and taught... or at least, I tried to. I went to my night class. Ouch.

They don't warn you about the physical cost of teaching. I'm not used to standing for five hours. My thighs aren't used to it, my feet aren't used to it. I'm not used to talking for pretty much five hours straight (even if you're doing it right, and getting kids to talk, you're still talking).

Now I've got some papers to grade, and dishes to wash. Then maybe I can actually spend some time with my wife... I hope so.

My Ramp-up to literacy students just don't care. The curriculum for that class is scripted--I am expected to do exactly what it says to do--and not all of what it says to do makes sense. I mean, I'm sure it has good science behind it, but the kids just don't care. I follow the lesson plan, and they complain.

Don's Ramp class wants to read Romeo & Juliet. My ramp class wants to sit and stare. I managed to get them interested in the book we're forced to read... hopefully I can build on this.

The Principal and Assistant Principal both dropped by my Ramp class today... I didn't see them after school (I had to get to my night class); I hope there wasn't a problem. I think they were told by the discipline guy* that I had lost control of my class (he'd dropped in just as two problem students acted up in a big way), but I had regained their attention by the time they got there, so hopefully all was well.

Today was, overall, better than yesterday. Still, I challenge anyone out there who thinks teaching is easy to come do it. I've been doing it only two days, and I am here to tell you that when veteran teachers say it's hard, they are not kidding. This job is NOT EASY.

But I'm still glad I'm doing it.
