If you see a stranger who is clearly in a bad mood, do NOT say "Hey, don't worry, things'll look up!" or "Hey, it'll get better" or my personal fave, "Wow, things can't be that bad!"*
Look, kids -- you don't know what said person is going through. If you simply must spread some sunshine, might I suggest just giving them a smile?
* This one was said to me not two hours after I learned one of my best friends had died. No one now; this was years ago.
