This won't signify to the vegetarians on my list, but I know [livejournal.com profile] ox_number_10 will join me in mourning.

Luis' Mexican Food, which was a mainstay of Sacramento Mexican Cuisine since the mid-1960s, is gone.

Luis Leyva, the founder, whose cheerful face could be seen in the many photos covering the walls of the restaurant, alongside politicians, sports stars, and Mexican entertainers, died several months ago. The rest of the family decided they were no longer interested in continuing the business, and closed the doors a few weeks ago.

I've had my last Luis' tacos -- which were made unlike any other taco anywhere -- and my last Luis' Chimichangas, which were a giant meal in themselves.

I'd been going to Luis' since I moved to Sacramento in 1986, and the family had become almost entirely known to me, though I wasn't what you'd call a friend of the family, I was definitely a regular. I'll miss Luis' smile when I said hello to him, I'll miss the food, but most of all I'll miss the comfort of a restaurant I loved, where I knew the menu so well I didn't have to look at it, where I knew what I'd be getting when I ordered and was never surprised. The restaurant itself was like an old friend; I knew the face and voice of every waiter and cook, and saw some of the same faces at the tables when I visited. It was a lovely place, and my only regret about it was that my beloved could never eat there -- the food, while delicious, was NOT good for you: everything was cooked in lard, and there wasn't a veggie option anywhere to be seen.

I'll miss you, Luis' Mexican Food.

I've been trying to find a textfile of Andromeda's opening quotes. All I can find is a page of screen captures. Bleah. Guess I get to transcribe them myself.
