I used to play a happy little game with my sister Blair called "Where's Blair?"

Basically, I'd pretend she was invisible, and start looking for her. She'd be saying "I'm right HERE!" a lot, and I'd be saying "I can hear her, she must be close!" and looking in all manner of places, both reasonable and un-, such as under the couch, in the microwave, or in her baby sister's ear. Eventually, I'd "suddenly" see her , exclaim "THERE you are!" and give her a big hug.

Sometimes, though, I'd carry it on too long, and she'd start to really believe I couldn't see her. Then she'd start to cry, and plaintively say "Brother, I'm right here!" Then I'd feel bad.

But mostly, she loved it.

Blair's turning 13 years old today. My little baby sister, the one who once crawled into her mom's lap and said "Momma, I miss my bwudder" when I'd just moved out, is a teenager. She's gone from screaming at her parents, "No, brother do it!" to snarking at me and telling me how weird I am. She says I'm a dork, and carefully forgets that she loves many of the same things I do.*

But sometimes, she calls me and asks if I'll come visit her, and when she expects me and I'm not there yet, she'll call to find out where I am and when I'll be there. Just like I used to do to her mom.

Four year-old darling or Teenager From Hell, she's my baby sister, and I love her.

Happy Birthday, Blair Kaitlin.

* Much to her (feigned) chagrin.
