So, I read something on [livejournal.com profile] shaggy's journal; it made me realize that I need to rethink a great deal of what I thought I knew about him. We're far more alike (barring our politics) than I previously was willing to admit.

This doesn't mean we're going to become good friends, of course -- only time can tell if that's to happen -- but it does mean I won't be quite so annoyed by him in future, now that I've seen a part of where he comes from.

Hypothetical:

If you say something with innocent intent, and it offends someone, do you actually bear any responsibility for the offense or not?

I think you do. The fact I didn't intend to offend you does not change the fact that I did.

What if the person offended is just in a foul mood, and something you say sets them off? My answer doesn't change; you are responsible for what you say even if the result is not what was intended. That doesn't mean you have to feel guilty, but a simple "Oh, I'm sorry I offended you" would do nicely.

Your thoughts?

Addendum: Do you see the difference between "I'm sorry I offended you" and "I'm sorry you felt offense"?

Article on Republican Senator's anti-gay comments and how it's 'no big deal'"

I am far, far too angry to write coherently on this just now.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] waiwode for giving me something to get my mind off angry stuff.

1. What if you could live inside of any book?
Jumper by Stephen Gould.

2. What if you could live inside of any movie?
Hrm. Either Star Wars: RoTJ (provided I could live through it) or Horatio Hornblower, provided I get to be Hornblower himself.

3. What if you could live inside any TV show?
Babylon 5.

4. What if you could be any one person from history?
Reginald Fleming Johnston, tutor to the last Emperor of China. Second choice would be Will Adams, the British man who was the inspiration for Shogun's John Blackthorne.

5. What if you could have lived during any one time in history?
Well, keeping in mind I'm quite fond of modern medicine ... Edwardian England.

The following (non-binding, dammit) proclamations are made:

Firstly, that I am sick to death of the Battle Imps. Stop it.

Secondly, that all persons living on the planet Earth learn the differences between:
affect/effect
their/there/they're
your/you're
to/too/two

Thirdly, that starting tomorrow, if your car's bass is so low I can feel it in my bones from five cars away, you will be shot and fed to dingoes;

Fourthly, that Firefly and Farscape are to go back into production tomorrow with all the original cast and crew, both to be broadcast on the Sci Fi Channel;

Fifthly, that starting tomorrow, the Sci Fi Channel is a property of the Crown; all decision-level executives are fired, the channel will be staffed by myself and my friends, and Joss Whedon, JMS, and Jim Henson Productions are to be given carte blanche with their shows;

and finally, all persons of model-caliber beauty shall present themselves to House Atreides for *ahem* job reassignment.

By My Hand;

Mahdi I,
Emperor of California

Hey, it worked for Emperor Norton.* With about as much chance of success, too.

* If you don't know who Emperor Norton was, look it up. If you're a native of San Francisco and you don't know, get off my planet.

One of the joys of being a parent, I'd imagine, is the passing down of your hobbies and loves to your children -- sharing a part of the world with your children, in the hope they'll love it as much as you do.

I'm not going to have children, which is a good thing, really. I haven't the patience. I'm good with kids, but I don't think I could handle it full time. And yeah, that's pretty much my self-justification to remove the pain of it. Because when you get down to it, I do want a child; I just don't think it's the best thing for me to do.

But to make up for that, I share things with my sister/cousins. Blair is a SF fan, and her parents aren't. So she relies on me to show her the world of Speculative Fiction. We discuss Harry Potter and analyze possible future storylines of the series. She wants to watch the SF Channel's version of Dune and CoD.

And I share with my friends, too. I look forward to getting the B5 S2 DVD set not only for myself, but because I'm sharing the show with Matt (and would share it with others if you'd all catch up and come watch with us). I don't loan out the discs, partially because I'm loathe to loan things anymore, having been burned a LOT, but mostly because I like to watch them with him. I love to see the look on his face when Londo says something funny, and I can't wait to see his face when the shitstorm begins.
