In an article at sfgate.com about the unfortunate incidents in Oakland, there's a tiny nugget of humor:

Richard Jimenez, a driver from Chowchilla waiting to deliver a load of almonds for export, said the demonstration "is not going to stop the war. It is stopping us.

"We don't carry bombs," Jimenez added. "We can only throw almonds at Saddam. "

Hey, Britgeekgrrrl. This is the answer to yesterday's challenge. :)

Last night I saw Jet Li's Chinese film Hero.

Wow. I mean, wow.

It's very Rashamon-like, but very much a Wuxia film. Gotta love it. I'll try to find a way to delay giving it back to Mike's mom, who loaned it to us, so some of you can see it -- it's not yet available in the US so far as I know (and will be cut badly when it is). Apparently there is a director's cut coming soon (import only, Mike and I will get it from Chinatown).

It also stars many of the greats of Wuxia cinema: Maggie Cheung, Zhang Ziyi, Daoming Qin, Donnei Yen, and Tony Leung. It's absolutely beautiful filmaking and a very nice story.

Read no spoilers! And the User Comments on IMDB were written by a moron, so ignore those, too.

I cannot blame Jacob alone for what happened between us. Regardless of the fact it wouldn't have worked anyway, my impatience with him lead me to treat him like crap. That contributed to our breakup as much as his actions did.

Taoism has helped me in many ways. Mostly, it's helped me to deal with my impatience with people -- the social niceties, the things people do to be polite that are based on silly superstitions (like "Bless you" after a sneeze).

I give unto you a Taoist proverb:

Patience is Power. With patience, the Mulberry leaf becomes silk.

Use it well.

Hey, Celtic music buffs:

I'm listening to a tape of an eight- or nine-year-old Thistle & Shamrock show. A song just played on it called "The Burning Times", sung by "Christy Muir" (spelling approximated off Fiona's accent).

It has the chorus:

(Corrected)
Isis Astarte Diana Hecate Demeter Kali Inanna

Anyone know where I can find info on this? Because my usual sources seem to never have heard of him.

As a semi-weekly service to fellow geeks, I repost from the Sci Fi Weekly.

I include here only the stories I think will interest my regular readers. If you want ALL the stories, go to ScifiWeekly

To protect those who don't care, I cut-tag each article behind its headline.

And now, it begins . . .

So, I just stumbled onto a spoiler of the last episode of Farscape, and all I can say is What the frell?

Now I need to see this.

So, [livejournal.com profile] ox_number_10 and I were just talking about the last Sil-West game, "Game of Empire", (LJ entries I made at the game -- which explain what the heck I'm about to go on about -- can be found at the end of this link) and I just slipped right back into Tarot Reese, thinking "If only I'd taken Supreme Commander Inari out when I had the shot" and "Dammit, why did I waste so much time on the frelling Algani?"

And wondering what ol' Tarot is up to, stuck on his rather pathetic homeworld, serving that bastion of leadership Tarran Deckar.

PHRED is an interesting planet now, in that reality.

And I still wish I'd shot Dorange Pilver in the face when she told me she was the Oracle. Lorelei was positive I was going to, and surprised I didn't. I figured at the time it was a waste of a powerpack. And it would have robbed poor Lor of all the angst she got afterwards, when I refused to speak to her.

Here's a fascinating article on the latest research into language and how it may factor into species propagation and evolution.
