Oh, for the love of something ugly . . .

Disney has acquired film rights to Piers Anthony's fantasy novel On a Pale Horse, with Jamie Foxx set to star and produce, along with Top Cow Productions, Variety reported. Paul Guay (Liar Liar) will adapt the novel for the screen.

Ok, I haven't read the Incarnations series in years, and I likely wouldn't be as impressed with them now as I was as a teenager. But Jamie Foxx? No. No, no, a thousand times no.

Song that brings things back #52:

Bonnie Tyler's I Need a Hero.

This song, dating from the early 80s when I was about 13, brings back several images, but most of them I'm ashamed to say are from the opening credits of the tragically bad-but-good "Cover Up", a spy-thriller TV show that used the song as its theme. The sight of Antony Hamilton walking out of the surf in very little is one I'll hold always as one of the first real "twinges" of sexual desire I ever felt.

Besides that (my straight friends can come back now), I used to have endless spy/action fantasies starring myself whenever I heard that song play on the radio.

Update: I've wondered often in the last few years what happened to Antony Hamilton and why his career just stalled out (he was once the leading contender to replace Roger Moore as James Bond, before Pierce Brosnan came on the scene as Remington Steele). I just did a search on him and found out. Hamilton was offered the role of Bond, but it was withdrawn when it was discovered that he was a homosexual. He had several shows after that, none lasted more than a year except the Mission: Impossible revival in 1988-1989. Antony died of AIDS-related illness in 1995.

I'm suddenly very sad; which I admit is silly. But to find that the man I idolized as "Perfect" actually shared my orientation, and then to find he suffered for his sexuality (not surprising, especially in those days) and died of that damned disease . . . it makes me sad.

The song has always conjured him for me; it will continue to do so.

For those too young to remember, the lyrics: )

I went to the Website for my high school and discovered that students are now required to carry school ID cards at all times.

Very disturbing.
