The Things We Think And Do Not Say...
Statement: "It wasn't to my tastes."
Translation: "It was crap. I can't imagine why you made me (eat, watch, or listen to) that crap. But since I like you, I'm going to say this so I don't offend you."
Statement: "I'm fine. Forget it."
Translation: "My heart is broken, I'm on the edge of the abyss. But I really just want you to go away."
Statement: "We can still be friends, right?"
Translation: "I have no intention of ever speaking to you again. The very thought of spending any more time in your company makes me want to retch. However, to maintain my own belief in my superiority, I'm pretending to still like you, completely ignoring that I've just dumped you, thereby proving I don't."
Statement: "S/he's very pretty, but s/he's a jerk."
Translation: "S/he won't sleep with me."
Statement: "I'm sorry you feel that way."
Translation: "You could not be more wrong. Anything you feel about my behavior is your problem; I bear no responsibility at all. You have no right to be bothered. Now apologise for having the audacity to be offended by me."
(I get that last one from my parents anytime they've been insulting my homosexuality or beliefs.)
