All my life, I've wanted to be a superhero.

Last night, I had the chance to be, if not a superhero, then at least a help. And I failed.

I was sitting, reading my book and waiting for Mike to get off work, in the mall. I heard a sound as of something hitting a wall and looked up to see two teenagers (I assume, they were between 15 and 25, at most) beating another man. I wanted to go to his aid, buy him time to get away, as he was trying to do.

And I froze. I couldn't make myself move, even to the aid of a fellow human. The best I could do is grab my cellphone and dial 911, but just as I hit "SEND" he managed to break away, and the security types came running, and the attackers hid and got away.

I feel such the useless drudge. And I discovered something annoying about my phone, too -- if dialing 911, you must hit SEND twice. Good to know. Why wasn't it in the manual?

Other, less annoying, things:

1) My evening with my little sister was a blast. The older she gets, the more fun I have with her and the more interesting our conversations are. I'm incredibly proud of the young woman she's becoming.

2) "Enterprise" premieres tonight. The Bee's TV columnist, with whom I usually agree, gives it an excellent review. I can't wait.
