Assorted bits of random thought

So, I went to help my Aunt and sisters with the Christmas tree. To Karla and the girls, this is a sacred tradition; to me, it's an annoying thing I have to do each year, filled with bitching and moaning about how we're not doing it right.

This year was mostly the same, but more pleasant than it could have been. Of course, the girls were of mixed feelings -- I started quizzing Blair on parts of speech, which put off Brooke because she wasn't getting the same attention, so I started quizzing her too, while teaching her about adjectives and adverbs.

The worst thing I could have said came out of my mouth while I was talking to Blair about her schoolwork and her recent English problems: "Honey, I know you're irritated with me, but you're so much like me I worry -- I don't want you to make the same mistakes in school I did." Karla's jaw hit the floor, then she laughed.

The major difference between Blair and I is that she thinks Math is easy -- she has a great teacher, a mathematician who also has degree in childhood education, rather than just a BA in Math. He's supposed to be great, and she loves him. I'm jealous. I get teachers who can't relate to human students.

I'm working my way through old entries, deleting the useless ones (those in which I plan outings with friends, quizzes, etc.) and adding the good ones, the things I'm proud I wrote, into my Memories. I got through most of 2001 last night, this afternoon I ought to get through at least half of 2002 (it gets harder, since I went from posting maybe once or twice a day to several times, much of it dross).

It occurred to me last night that I bought Farewell My Concubine years ago -- and have yet to watch it. Hmmm. Perhaps tonight, since we're knee deep in reruns and I haven't any schoolwork.
