I've been accused lately of speaking in "big words" in an attempt to put others down.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, with a very few exceptions (like children), I never even consider the possibilty I won't be understood. It just never occurs to me that the person I'm talking to might not understand the word "pertinent", or (and this one actually was used today in discussing a story I love) "apotheosis."

These are the words I know. I use them, without malice or forethought -- I rarely have to think what I'm going to say or write, I merely let the words flow. Yes, I am an elitist snob -- I admit to that -- but I don't put you DOWN by speaking to you as I do -- rather, I am unconciously doing you the honor of assuming you're educated enough to understand me.

And there's also the fact that I don't know everything, kids. I mean, I had never heard the word "apotheosis" (which, for those playing at home, means "the process of becoming a god") until a Babylon 5 episode title flashed on the screen ("Falling towards Apotheosis"), sending me to the dictionary.

So. To sum up:

If you don't like my words? Too bad. Either buy a dictionary or ASK me. I promise I won't think less of you -- I'm a teacher, remember? I live to impart knowledge. :)

(Hey, I said I was a snob!)
